Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is the natural way to feed a child and it is also the best for his growth and his development. It also has a positive biological and psychological affect on the health of the mother and the child.

Ideally all the staff in the health Department who work with pregnant women or young mothers would have the will to encourage breastfeeding and able to give the needed information and therefore have an excellent knowledge of breastfeeding.

Common declaration from OMS.UNICEF 1989

Today the benefits derived from breastfeeding are not widely demonstrated anymore. Unfortunately, in France only 52% of women breastfeed their babies (statistics relate to first 3 weeks). Classical preparations do not focus enough on breastfeeding and the support to young mothers depends upon the politics of the hospital. to support or not in active and positive ways breastfeeding.
All hospitals do not have a real program to support breastfeeding. A major part of women at the end of their pregnancy have not taken part in any courses about breast feeding.

We wish to work with some associations of breastfeeding to support and inform future young mothers about the benefits of breastfeeding and how to start. We think it is important for them to know that breastfeeding can start easily for some women and for others it may take a little bit longer, and we would like to tell them how to deal with it. We are aware that when a mother is well informed things go more easily compared to a mother who has not had information at all or very few.
Furthermore the length of the stay in hospital after a woman has given birth is shorter and shorter, some women may have their milk comes in for the first time at home and a well planned preparation seems to be fundamental to help them having a good breastfeeding experience.
